Sand storm?

[Need more info,

How did it happen?

How old is the tank?

What type of sand?

What size tank?

Live Rock? How Much?

What type of water movement?

Any filtration?

Sometimes running a canister or power filter filled with floss will help it clear up faster.]

[How did it happen?- new tank and just pour water in.
How old is the tank?- 2 days

What do i need to put in the canister to help it clear faster?]

[Now that is more like it. Lots of info.

OK, new tank set up with new sand. How did you fill the tank? That will have a bit to do with how long it takes. Meaning how stirred up did it get when you filled. I know we are past this point but the best way I have found is to set a big bowl on a big plate and then run the water into the bowl. Make sense? Remember it for next time.

Could not quite tell from your answer as to if there is live rock in the tank or you are planning on getting some. If there is some it will help.

Here is what is happening. The sand is new and there are no bacteria on it. The small particles have nothing to cling to so they just swirl and swirl. If you have some live rock on the tank it will help colonize the bacteria and settle the sand storm down.

If it is really bad it could take as long as a week to clear up totally. Just wait it out. It will clear up.

The canister filter will help though. Do you know what filter floss is? It looks like the stuffing from a stuffed animal. You can buy it at the LFS but it is much cheaper from the fabric store. Just fill the canister filter with it and let it run for a few days, not too long as to start a bacteria cycle in the floss. It will definitely help clear the tank though. I just reset up my tank a week ago, all new sand, and using the bowl and plate method in combination with the filter floss in the canister it was clear in a day and half.

Hope that helps,

[I sure did stirred that sand up good, i use a mag 9 to pump the water from the rubbermaid to the tank and did do some big mess. But i am planning to order some lr. I recently bought 60lb of LS from a member here and just pour it in on top of my dead sand lastnite, i hope this will calm the sand storm, and thats for the idea on the canister.I'll try that tomorrow and see the result. Thx a lot]

[If I had to put a bet on this, I'd say 7 days.]

[I did that with my first sandbed about 5.5yrs ago... :D What a pain. What worked for me to clear it up was to attach fine pore sponges (Tetra Brilliant Sponge filters)to my powerhead intakes and then clean the sponges every coupla hours or so by placing plastic bags over the sponges and then removing them to be thoroughly washed out. Using the bag stops the kalk from draining back into the tank when the sponge is removed. :D

I just added a 4" sandbed to my new replacement 55 Sunday, and this time, I did it right! I dumped 100lbs of dry playsand from Lowes into the tank, topped it with 20lbs of dry aragonite sand (it is slightly larger grain size to the playsand so should stay on top) then I split one of the playsand plastic bags so it would lay out flat. I placed the plastic on top of the sand and then a bowl and began pumping my old tank water back into the new tank into the bowl. I filled the tank 3/4 full then placed the liverock and corals back in. I then filled the tank all the way and added two ph and canopy. Waaalaaaa......no milkshake....instant reef! Seriously, I did not have any clouding! That first time, I destroyed 4 pump impellers because of the sandstorm. I know it's too late this time, Dat, but next time....... ;)]
