Sand in Water

I have about a 2 inch layer of southdown sand in my 55 gallon display. It seems that no matter where I place the powerheads (two MJ 1200s that have been modified), I'm getting sand floating all over the tank. It constantly looks like it's snowing in there! My husband thinks I should remove all the sand and put in something else.

I don't know what to do. I want the water to be clear. Anyone have suggestions as to what will make my water look clear? If I take out the sand, what should I use instead? BTW, I have a DSB in my refugium.

How long has the sand been in your tank? It took almost 3 months for our southdown to build up enough bacteria to hold the sand together. Now the only time the sand in suspended in the water is after our maroon clown thinks she needs to stir it, but then it settles right back down.

I added my sand bed on 10-26-05. So, about 2.5 months ago.

I just need to wait it out then? Give it a little more time?

Perhaps you can arrange your rockwork a bit differently to help divert some of the flow from those powerheads. Or adjust the way the powerheads currently are arranged, so they don't blow across the sand.
