Sand for a new setup

I'll trying to find out some information about sand for a sandbed for a new setup.

I was going to see about purearagonite.com but the site doesn't work any more.

I was looking and some people are saying to use the Pulvierized Limestone from HD.

I have also see http://www.naturesocean.com/live_sand.htm but not a price listed anywhere.

Trying to get all the prices listed, to get the new setup, but can't seem to figure out what to do about the sand.

Thanks,

p2kmon.

I've used the home depot sand and Its ok but you'll have to wash it for hours before you put it in the tank. I used the natures ocean brand in my tank. I paid 29.00 dollars for a 20lb bag for it.

Are you planning a Deep Sand Bed or just sand for looks? If the latter, go with anything you like color and size wise. I would avoid crushed coral, but any of the argonite or silica sands will be fine.

If you are going DSB, I would do the limestone or see if you can get sugar oolitic online someplace or locally.

I'm going for a 4-6 deep sea bed. Hopefully the Critters will help clean it out.

I'm moving from a 30 gallon to a 55 or 100 gallon, wife wants to know the cost, to upgrade.

Ahh.... well the HD sand is cheap... just like the yardright and southdown was. It's probably the better route as well.

Are you going to have a week or two flexibility in transfer?? If so, I would use the limestone and just sift it first, getting the rocks and any debris out of it, then put it in unwashed. There is a trick to help keep the mess to a minimum. When you are ready to do your tank, put the sand in the bottom dry, into a dry tank. Use a bucket lid and lay it on top of the sand, then use a very low power pump to fill the water up. This will help prevent as much of a snow storm as possible.

If you have the luxury of time, rinsing it will remove a lot of the fines you would like with a DSB. It takes longer to settle and stay settled with them in there, but its helps the bed more.

Use some of the sand from your old tank to seed the new bed, or get a kit or two from InlandAquatics.com or IPSF.com. They have detrivore kits that are ideal for new sandbeds.

This is the best sand I have found anywhere. I have used it on a couple of tanks. Worth the extra.

Thanks,

I'll take a look at that.
I'm also looking at the Black sand.

They say I would need 200 for my 55 gallon, and the garf is saying 101 lbs of sand... hmmm

Thanks,

Your sand depth depends on what you are trying to accomplish. If you are just wanting a sand cushion bottom an inch or two is fine. If you are wanting a deep sand bed in the tank you will need at least 4-6 inches. Most people put about two inches in the tank and run a remote deep sand bed in the fug. Fish selection can also determine depth. Some fish like to burrow in the sand and you will need at least 2-3 inches for that. I think there are several threads on bottoms. A lot are going with bare bottoms and putting in a plastic sheet in to protect the bottom from falling objects. Pick your poison!
