Saltwater Pond

Has anyone ever thought about starting up a saltwater pond? If anyone out there has I would really appreciate any feedback or information you can provide. If not, could you direct to where I could get information on this, thank you so much.

Welcome to the club Keith!!! :D

I know that Julian Sprung has one and maybe two outdoor tanks. I'm not sure if it is a "pond". I would love to have an outdoor set up. It would be great to see what colors you could get. The intensity of the light would be so great that you would probably need to place sun sheets over the water.

There is no way here to have a tank outside uncovered. You could have a 5000 gallon pond which is not that hard to make outside. Spend over $800 in just salt to the salinity right and one good rainstorm would dilute the salinity down to tears in hours. Not only would the salt be gone but any saltwater fish that had been in it.

I have been looking for a link since this thread was started and I can not find it. I saw a special about a guy that built a deep pond in his back yard and placed a veiwing window in his basement.
It looked really good and it was open to the back yard. It was about 10 feet deep and the viewing pane was approx. 6 x 3 feet.
I will keep looking for the link.

Who said you had to build a pond outdoors?

I know the Waikiki aquarium has several outdoor tanks - http://www.waquarium.org/

Check out their virtual tour. But around here you'd have to settle for a greenhouse or something similar. Have you considered adding a solartube or skylight to utilize natural sunlight?

I have been to the Waikiki aquarium several times because I am from Hawaii, and that is where I got the initial idea for this. I know that temperature, evaporation, salinity, and local wildlife could be a problem. However couldn't we counteract these problems by installing a couple massive chillers, large protein skimmer, UV sterilizer, surge tank, etc. I realize that all of this would be very costly, but if possible the pond could always be scaled down to say a 500 to 800 gallon system. Also if it was this size the pond could be a raised structure not in the ground with a couple of side viewing panels.

I guess it would if you want to look at it that way, but it would give you the abilityto have a structure with limited side viewing as opposed to just having a somewhat vulnerable all glass or acrylic tank just sitting outside. Check out the Waikiki "Edge of the reef exibit", granted if I where to do this it would be much much smaller, theirs is 7500 gallons. The way that I understand their set up is that it is all done by a surge system, no other pumbs, heaters, cooling etc. I know heating and cooling would be an issue here.
