SALT

Oh boy, here we go.

I have used Tropic Marin for quite some time. I will probably use Tropic Marin Pro on my 36g plan.

I USE INSTANT OCEAN FROM PETSMART. ( IT'S THE CLOSEST PLACE WITHIN 25 MILES FROM ME THAT SELLS SALT) IT'S DECENT PRICE AND I HAVE HAD NO PROBLEMS WITH IT.

The best salt is the one that you're the happiest with. It can be Trop marin, IO, or Any of them. The side effect of this is what other elements comes in the salt? You can have the greatest salt by research, but it may require dosing every other element depending on the needs of your tank.
I personally run with Red sea coral Pro, but that's only because it's what was available when I needed it. I had to adjust my dosing of Mg and Calcium, but everything else was stable.

I have used Red Sea Pro before but my ph would constantly swing.
I got the most stable parameters with Tropic Marin... I have never used Tropic Marin Pro however... but I'm going to next as I stated earlier.

Red Sea Coral Pro :D

It's also good to have really good water to start with; if you haven't already now's a good time to invest in a ro/di unit.

Which ever salt you decide to go with said:
Do you like Ford or Chevy? Matt is correct there is no best salt just pick one that matches your needs. I also use Red Sea Pro but Reef Cystals at times as well since I have three buckets on hand from a group buy.

Here is a thread that could help you decide but note that not brands were tested. http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1287118

I'm really not sure why people use the more expensive salts like TM and HW, etc.

I used HW for a few years a few years ago but once I started thinking about it I tried RC and have never looked back (except for a one bucket oceanic experiement in 04) For almost 4 years I have had no issues with it whatsoever and it rarely differes in alk by 1 dkh or in calcium by 25ppm. alk ~11 and calcium ~425

RC's values are at least as good as all the expensive stuff and it's super consistent!

But as others have said, use what you want. They all work!
