salt

my salt is runing around 1.026 do i need to be worried? everything seems to be ok. i don't make my own salt i buy at lfs. my nitrates are staying at 5 could the salt have something to do with that?

normally you want to stay between 1.023 - 1.025 for a reef tank. you say your at 1.026 to ME that's okay I run mine about 1.025.

What brand salt does your LFS use.

Kent is fine but they had a problem awhile back. I know they won't mind if you ask nicely what there using. I had a bad alge problem awhile back until I started to mix my own water. I was getting my water already mixed from a LFS also.

I would test the saltwater you are getting from them and see what the levels are before adding it to your tank.

i had them test before the last water change it was 1.024. today my water is between 1.025&1.026. what about the salt build up around the fuge and other things, shouldn't the saltiny lower?

When water evaporates it's just the water, the salt is left in the tank. You're probably experiencing evaporation. You need to keep the salinity steady by topping off with RO/DO non-salt water. Most reefers have an auto top-off system - you won't believe how fast the water evaporates!

i top off with fresh water allmost everyday. i go through 6gal a week. i drew a line on my fuge when i first started my tank i keep the water within 1 gal of that line and i always test salinity when my water is on the line. thanks for all the feedback

The salt build is fine everyone has it. All you need to do is top off with reg. RO water. Keep checking your parameters and do water changes. And you will be fine.
