salt

Ive been watching the board for a while now, and was just wondering ( now that I have a RODI unit) , what salt is the best for the money? Ive noticed group buys of Kent , heard Instant Ocean refered to a number of times, But IYO , what is the overall most simple to mix and do water changes with that has it all PH, and Trace minerals to maintain a good reef? Sorry if this seems like a stupid question, but I really value your guys opinion. Thanks to everyone that posts on this board (particularly DFWMAS members)Your help to us in the hobby for less then a year is invaluable. Les

That's one of those "Who's the best person to vote for for president?" type questions... There's a lotta debate about it, and a lot of waving of arms. As long as you're not using a known "bad" one (Oceanic comes to mind) I'd stick with what you've been using if you've had good results with it...

(For the record, I've been using Instant Ocean exclusively for my almost 8 years in the hobby, and have no complaints with it. In my mind it's basically a choice between Instant Ocean (Or Reef Crystals) or Kent)

One BIG gotcha for any salt that bit me in the backside when I first started - ALWAYS add salt to water, NOT water to salt! If you measure out the salt, put it in a dry container, then start adding water, the water will become super-saturated and the calcium (And who knows what all else) will precipitate out and cause a white film on the container, which doesn't do your tank any good... :) )

Serk's good recommendation on adding the salt to water rather than the other way around. I too learned that the interesting (and painful when I had to clean it out) way
