Sad day in mudville - Casey struck out!

[The 100 gal has been up for almost 2 weeks now and sadly we suffered our 1st loss recently. The fish had been transferred from thier 20 gal holding tank into the 100 gal after I had let the water circulate for 5 days. I tested the water daily to keep an accurate watch of its parameters.I never had any ammonia , Nitrite, or even Nitrate spikes during those days.I used all my 55 gals water and the 20 gals of water from the QT as well. Well Monday morning we awoke to find our beautifull Rusty Angel dead under the rocks.I fished him out and Immediatly started scanning for the others. The 2 Clowns were breathing rapidly so I fired up my 10 Gal QT just in case and tossed in my sponge that i always have in the sump to jump start it.I couldnt find the Yellow tang or our Bi-Color Psuedochromis........ OUT CAME THE CLOWNS! A quick PM to Amanda our resident fish doctor and off to the store I go to get Meth Blue.I dosed the QT per her instructions and after 2 days the Clowns were back to normal. Thanks Amanda, you saved my Clowns! As of today the clowns are doing wonderfull and are happy. All inverts are thriving so far and strangely enough my Branching Hammer that didnt do SQUAT in my 55 gal has split 3 heads in 2 weeks, and my Frogspawn that also struggled in the 55 split a head off this week.We did notice a Turbo snail died in the 1st days of the tank but I left him in there for bacteria food.God I'd hate to think that the turbo dying set off a chain reaction becuase my bacteria load wasnt up to snuff. Thanks again Amanda!

[Sorry about your loss. Glad you saved the clowns. How did you decide that Meth Blue was treatment of choice - it's a pretty powerful bacteriocide, if I remember my microbiology rightly enough...]

[Chuck, the Methylene blue has so many great uses I couldnt begin to list them all. It was my first recommendation here because the fish were breathing heavy due to the amm or possible nitrite in the water. Meth blue is an oxygen transporter so it will raise the oxygenation in the tank water. Its also very safe for use in fish at the correct dosage, and can be very soothing to them as well.]

[Good stuff! Thanks, Amanda.
I used to use potassium permangate in my fresh water tanks to kill bacterial blooms (I'd see the fish brushing against plants or rock to de-itch or de-parasite themselves). Really potent stuff and very cheap - however, I would never never never think of using it in a main tank. See attached article link as it goes into using potassium permangate in fish ponds:

[Eureka thats some strong stuff Chuck!
The m blue was used in Andy's qt and is not safe for the main tank, I didnt want anyone to be misguided by my last post.]

[Since I have some spare meth Blue Ill be using it now for FW Dips for the newcomers Ill have to buy before they go into the QT. Isnt it great that we have a resident experts for fish care . My hats off to you Rev and Amanda for your knowledge! Everyday I learn from this hobby!
