Running skimmer external or internal

Just bought a Octopus DNW-150 with a footprint of 16"x 7" wondering if I should set it up to run internal sump which will require me to purchase a (expensive ) custom sump or External which I can DIY a 29 gallon with baffles to get by.

your thoughts and problems of external use?

I run mine externally and the only two issues I've had are the o ring on the pump didn't want to seat after cleaning so I have to use a little aquarium silicon to keep it from leaking. The other issue I had was too much air was coming down the drain into the skimmer making the chamber a little to turbulent and affecting performance. Other than that I like just being able to slide it out to clean it. I used to run a skimmer in the sump on my last tank and hated dragging it out to clean it.

i run my Octopus DNW-200 externally, i love it that way it gives you more room to play with in your sump for other things...

same as chris my o ring needed to be siliconed when i first bought it...but after that it works perfectly

if you have any questions on modding it let me know....i modded the o-ring for more air into the venturi and i mesh modded the impeller...

The only issue with externals is the risk of overflow... occasionally skimmers will go nuts and overflow. if they are internal, thats not a big deal, but if they are external, you could have a very smelly mess on your hands. If you go external, i would highly recommend a skim holding tank or jug that your cup is plumbed into just in case.

To prevent skimmer overflows on recirc skimmers, I incorporated the trick in this thread(half-way down). http://www.dfwmas.org/Forums/viewtopic.php?t=25453&highlight=das+ex2
