Rough Bio-pellets

I took out my bio-pellets tonight, rinsed them, and reduced the amount that I had in the reactor. While I was rinsing them I noticed that they were very rough. Is this caused form them bouncing off of each other or do they do this in the process of reducing Nitrates?

Their shape will change as they are consumed by bacteria. I just cleaned out my reactor and the leftover media was definitely different from the new. Still used it though, since it isn't cheap.

I was thinking it may be due to being used by the bacteria but was just checking to see if anyone else had the same thing. Thanks
