Rocks for pod piles

I am wanting to make more pod piles and also what I'll refer to as "moveable" pod piles. I have some CaribSea gravel I used in my freshwater tank (about 20 pounds left) that's just sitting around and some other freshwater tank gravel extras. I also have some extra tonga branches but those are super hard even with a hammer to break up into small pieces. So can I use the freshwater gravel? Is there any type of rock I should avoid using? I only need about 2-3 pounds I figure for what I want to do. The other option is a small bag of Florida Crushed Coral but the smallest bag I see online is 10# so I doubt it comes smaller. PetSmart nearby has one 15# bag in stock but that's a lot... although there might be more tank benefit with the crushed coral. Which is the best option?

I would not use anything that has been in your freshwater tank - unless you are going to clean well, dry, and clean again. There may be latent bacteria that can harm salties.

Can you go to a local lfs, buy a rock, and smash it? Since rock is (usually) not more than $6 per lb, you would not need much. - Or, get it here next time someone breaks down a tank.

I have a container of loose rubble in my sump, that is from rocks and corals (dead) that I broke up. Works well for anything critterish and small!

Sorry I didn't make that very clear. I have a half a bag of unused gravel, still in the original bag. The gravel is by CaribSea called "Super Gravel Aquarium Gravel From Around The World" So I don't know exactly where these rock pieces come from, so that's my concern. I guess I"m just better off picking up the smallest bag I can find of crushed coral. Thanks, anyways.

is the rock poreous? maybe you can call around to some stone yards and see if they have any tufa in or maybe someone has some available here. the tufa rock is awesome for pods. i stacked a bunch of rubble in the back on my tank in the corner where no fish can get to.

I think gravel is a little too fine for what you want. Pod piles can be a mixture though, but I'd try to keep things around raisin to grape sized.

Ah, thanks... that's what I needed to know, too. I was thinking much smaller than that.

I remember seeing a DYI on RC that looked like some time of hard netting formed with the rocks in it so you could move it around. I will see if I can find the link.
