RO DI tanks not filling up

I have an RO DI system from BRS I've been using for about 6 months. The DI is a separate part and it never completely fills with water. When sitting it's about 1/4 filled. When running it'll get 1/2 filled. I can block the outflow pipe and it will fill completely, but then when it's released it empties. Is this normal? I thought everything should be completely filled.

Is the DI filter the kind that lays on it's side? If so, it cannot fill up due to gravity, unless you stand it upright with the outlet on top!

I have the same unit. Mine never even gets half filled. I do hope this is normal. Mine is upright. I was wondering about this too. David

If the outlet is at the top of an upright canister, how does water flow from the outlet if it doesn't fill up?

i've seen it do this lots of times. it does it on mine sometimes too. As long as it the water is coming out at zero I do not see an issue.

And the air is probably causing pressure that's why it still works but for some reason the water is not displacing the air so it can escape.

What Steve said is the only explanation. Enough pressure to push the water up the center. I assume the center that we can't see is full. Hey David, those zoas I got from you are doing great. Thanks for the good deal. David

I reread the instructions that came with it and they say it is normal for the DI stage to not fill with water. They do say if desired you can open the canister slightly while the unit is running to allow the air to escape. Retighten when the water reaches the top. I'll probably do this when I replace filters.

It has nothing to do with water pressure, as in trapped air. Every other housing you have fills with water, so why wouldn't this one? What's happening is based on water temperature and the pressure of the water coming out of the membrane, that will affect the housing being full or not. Do you turn off the entire system by closing the valve after the DI? If you do, then you'll see the air vanish as it continues to fill up until the ASOV shuts the system down.

Water must pass through the DI to exit, so it is working fine. Usually you'll see this with brand new cartridges, but after about 10 days it stays full all the time; unless you are shutting off the water at the source instead.

i didn't mean water pressure i meant pressure inside the canister. its acting just like water that's how the water is still exiting.

There is no valve after the DI. It's just the blue outlet hose coming out of the DI. I have a manual value on the red line going into the RO unit from the source which is how I believe it was per the instructions. I usually turn that on and off to make water. Ambient air pressure seems to make the most sense. I put a valve on it to test and if I shut off the outlet the canister will fill and be under high pressure, which is probably not a good thing long term, and the auto shut off kicks in. As soon as I open the valve, water sprays out under pressure till it gets back to being 1/4 full or so.

Now it makes me wonder if you should open the canister and turn the cartridge over every so often?

I do not think there is any need to turn the cartridge over. Plus I think there is an up and down to the cartridge.

If you turn the cartridge over you won't get 0 tds I speak from experience. My di chamber does not fill up and I do not have any issues

If you never pressurize the system and turn it off at the cold water source, the housing won't appear to be full of water.
