RO/DI Output

I recently purchased a used RO/DI unit (the 4 stage Hi-S Maxxima 60)...the individual selling it had said they had just replaced all the membranes etc.

I had terribly hard tap water, and as a result, wanted to soften it up and take out the impurities with the RO/DI unit.

Everything seems to be hooked up fine, and running through the chambers correctly, however on my tests, the water seems to be quite a bit harder than RO water I get from DNA etc...

Does anyone know what the culprit might be? From what I understand, I have one of the better units, and thus it should be taking out all of the dissolved minerals, right?

I will have to check TDS tonight...

It was stated that he replaced all cartridges and membranes...

I;ve never owned one so I dont know if this will help or not, but have you made sure your testing equipment is correct? You said your water is already extremely hard, and it still tested rather hard out of the RODI unit. Could be something like that.

If you test for TDS tonight and it checks out, I would probably take a sample up to your LFS and have them test it too.

Well, I was using testing strips. I actually tested that water first, and then tested RO water that I received from DNA...

The water from DNA came out completely clean, and the water from mine came up just "soft".

First of all, your system only has one membrane. The membrane is where the Reverse Osmosis occurs. All the rest are filter cartridges.

I don't know what test strip you are using specifically. Are you testing KH or dKH? What matters:

Is it pulling out all nitrate?
Is it pulling out all phoshpate?
Is it pulling out all copper?
Is it pulling out all chlorine?

Is the TDS near 0 levels? If you don't have a TDS meter, ask someone near you to test a water sample with their meter, or buy one of your own.

Eugene -

I can show you my RO/DI unit and my TDS meter when you come over to pick up the starfish tomorrow night.
