RO/DI Help Needed, Please!

I'm thinking of buying one of these off ebay as it is the only one I've seen that comes close to my budget (lol...what budget!) and would really appreciate some feedback from anyone with experience buying and using these filters. I have no experience with using one so I am in the dark regarding what to look for and am really hoping someone will take a look at this and tell me if it is worth buying and what, if any are the drawbacks of this system over a more expensive one. The cost is why I am interested in this, but, is worth it? Are there any upgrades that I should consider if I do get it and does it look like it could be upgraded if needed. Any help would be much appreciated! :)

prob i see is that it doesnt use reg. replacement filters from what i can tell

at that price you can throgh it away when the filters get bad { if you cant find fillters at a good price} and still be head . i would give it a try.it is only 65.00

i dont know if buying a new ro/di system is good thing everytime filters go bad especially if you are on a budget. depending on how bad your city water you could be replacing some filters every 6 months if you have bad city water.

usually a whole set of filters cost around 30 bucks this is for a reg system not the one listed on ebay

From what I could make out from his listing, these use 'standard 10" replacement filters that can be bought anywhere" .. if I'm understanding this right? Plus he carries the replacements and has been around for 8+ years. I have always used city water and I KNOW it is bad, especially seasonally...nitrites can be off the charts some times of the year and has resulted in a complete tank loss when I didn't test the tap water before a major fw tank change...learned my lesson there...poor discus!

Anyway, do you all think this is better than a Tap Water Purifier? My other option.

the carbon and sediment are not common replacement filters we use ... usually you replace just the filter on the ebay one you will replace the whole carbon and sediment filter assembly as it is one whole unit.

for me i would wait for a used one comes up on the for sale forum.

Thankyou, everyone! I don't know what 'standard' is which is why I'm asking. I would rather buy a more well known-tried n true unit but, I am really restrained by costs, especially the initial outlay. (and No, I do not want to have to replace the entire unit every time I use it! LOL) I'll check into the replacement costs and see how that looks.

Don't buy one. I will give you the one I just replaced a couple days ago. It is very similar but only the carbon and sediment filters were common. Everything else was hard to find and only lasted for a short amount of time. You'll need to find the DI filter and the funny taste filters on it. Also, I was running at about 3 to 1 waste ratio. Ultimatley, I decided to get one of the expensive ones with a booster pump as my head pressure is only about 40 psi. Don't like living so high on a hill with poor Ft Worth water pressure.

Oh, thankyou so much for the offer, bhammer! Tom thankyou for the link and info, too! Actually, I have been looking around and have pretty much decided against this unit for the very same reasons you both give, too much wast water, hard to find and quick to run out replacement parts. I am going to wait a bit longer and save for a unit that can be refilled with bulk medias and has a much higher gpd rating.

I spent a pretty penny on the Puratek 200 GPD RO/DI Filter System for my setup. The big seller for me was the booster pump and automatic operation. I have a T, one that goes to my salt and the other to my plain water. Each has a cheap float valve and shuts the unit off when done making water. A lot of the other ones I looked at would require a selonoid valve to shut the supply off to keep from making waste water. I leave the salt valve closed so I don't acidentally change my salainity but it is really a set and forget. One other big seller for me was I took the waste line and placed in a five gallon bucket. It filled up about 1 minute before the other 5 gallons did. I am just over a 1:1 ratio. My input water runs at about 160TDS. Your results could be different with other TDS readings.
