RO/DI Buffer?

So I just ordered my first RO/DI filter. I have been getting my water so far at DNA. They ask me frequently if I want buffer added to the water. I was wondering if anyone knew what buffer they were adding.?

I am assuming they are adding it because the PH of RO/DI water is much lower than our reef tanks.

When I make the water at home, should I be adding buffer to it before using it for top off?

I assume when I mix saltwater with RO/DI water using Coral Pro salt, I do not need to use buffer. Is that true?

Buffer is used to raise/maintain alk or pH. I suppose you could add it to your RO top off... but I would rather add it to the tank so I know exactly how much is going in.

As far as water changes with saltwater goes, its a good idea to match the alk, ca, mg of the tank. This way when you do a change those parms stay the same. In some cases you might need to add supplements to get those levels, in others not.
