Rinsing sand

[If you use Live sand thats already been in an established tank for a new tank, how well do you rinse it out? Also, do you use tap or RO/DI water to do it?]

[If you rinse it out, it will be 99% dead. I rinse it in the garden with a garden hose until the water runs clear.

Just fill the bucket with sand 1/3 full.]

[If you rinse it, you'll need to seed it from some other sand source. Or save a few cups (not rinsed) to put in your tank once you are done.]

[Put the live sand on top of the dead sand and put it into a pile. The sand naturally gets spread around and you want the microbes to have time to make their way into deeper sand.]

[I have a ? for you. How long will the live sand last with just sitting in a tank? I took down my tank last weekend & forgot to get some out. I plan on cleaning it on monday, is there a sm chance i think not but i thought i would ask you pros becouse i saw codys post just now.
Bump]

[If it was outside in the cold climate, I'd assume it is about dead. If it was inside, it might still have some life in it.]
