Rick's sps frag

[I got this nice sps frag (of a wild collected colony) from Rick a while back. It's starting to colorup nicely. I can see the multiple color - well, noticeable purple/blue at the tips. I can't wait to see more color. I think it's supposed to be all blue - but I seriously doubt that my tank has the right amount of light for that to happen. In any case - this is a nice piece. Thanks Rick.]

[How is it looking now? I have a mini colony of that, and the tips are all turning a very nice dark blue. I love the contrast of the unusual looking brown and blue combination.

I thought that the body of the coral was going to turn green, like the little bit of green I see on yours, but it never went any further than what I see on your coral.]

[I have a frag of it also. The tips are nice and baby blue but I don't have it in the optimal light place so I don't expect it o color way up. The yellow on it is brilliant though! I'll try to get a pic soon.]

[Photo Update on frag - It really looks better in person. You can see the brown/tan is bleached and turning to lighter color. The tips are just very colorful. I'm amazed.

[No. It's one of the frags in the shipment that smiller and Rick brought in. It's a wild acro. I just know it as 'that frag I got from Rick'. And it's getting prettier and prettier...]

[Matt - It's Nikon 4500 and it does good macro. It's still alot of hit or miss with me taking pictures of my corals. But it's digital so I just delete the crappy shots.

BTW - Marc's photobox makes a big difference. It lets the camera lens get really close to the coral underwater- without moving it.]

[Wow, it has grown a lot in only two months! Are you adding steriods to your tank?

Do you still use Golden Pearls, and if so, how often and how much?]

[Marc -

I think my tank is doing better now that I am making an effort to keep alkanity above 8. I must say bare bottom works, either that or I'm really spending alot of time to get my tank together. Oceanic salt was dragging my ALK to 3 or 4 - while my calcium reactor was not working. So - I'm adding washing and baking soda (homemade buffer) to correct it everytime I change water. Also - I'm adding magnesium frequently. Joe Tran told me to add 1 tsp daily. I think my magnesium is at 1500 but I don't measure it religiously.

I do feed golden pearl at night. 1/4 tsp every week.

oh yeah - let's not forget I treat my tank for red bugs twice!!! I'm having to treat it again earlier this year because I did not quarantine new purchases. Right now I use 10 gallon tank to QT every coral that goes to SPS tank. Not sure if it makes a difference but I feel better that way.

[WTG on the baking soda peter,Its a great easy way,, just test it , I knew your tank would mature fast with the barebottom. In genral where the acroporas are collected there isnt alot of detritus or debris that is settled,, thats why the BB theory works.. everything is kept in suspension if its there..:)]

[i may be able to help you with an id if you can provide a little more info

so for my first question, does he appear to have a relatively uniform growth pattern like a table acro? (i guess what im asking is does he grow like a table acro?)

and do his polyps appear to be gray? (sometimes cameras distort color they look brown but i just want to double
check)]

[Nice acro man, very nice shot too, that just further's my confidence in the photo box - must have one now lol - ofcourse every time I've taken pics is always 50/50 hit & miss due to reflections and/or bad angles through the glass.

odd colors and polyps.....]
