Return Pump

I'd like to have a turnover of about 4 to 5 times. With the chiller in the loop I thought I might lose a little bit. I'm leaning towards the 4000.

of those two choice 4000 would be better, but IMO, I'd like something a little strong. at 5 ft your only pumping maybe 700gph, then add 90's and a tee to the chiller, that will be knock significantly. I just went through the same on my 120, with the chiller and two overflows. I went with the Ocean Runner 1800gph. Works great, even with the 90's and tee to the chiller I still get great turnover.

According to that calculator... youll end up with around 730 GPH with the 4000 High Head, that's with 8 (est.) 90s, 4 gate valves and 4 Unions (I estimated how I would do it with a chiller in the middle. That is not counting the chiller option... and with a 1inch PVC width. With .75" its 562 gph....

If you are doing a 120, with 30g sump/fuge (guessing) thats 150 total water volume.. thats 750 at 5x turnover...

You are in the ballpark with the 4000 provided you use the 1" line everywhere. But you are also close enough that you may want to consider other options.

What size in/output is the 4000 and your chiller... is everything 1"?

he stated 4000 regular not high head. if he's plumbing the chiller through the return, chances are he going to use a tee to run a line to the chiller. Tee's have greater restiction than 90's by far.

I will be using 1" plumbing and yes I will also have a tee for the chiller. However with about 150# of rock I figured I'd only have about 100g of total water volume even with the sump/refugium. Heck maybe less. The chiller is a JBJ 1/5 HP and requires around 400gph flow through it. Actually their site says "FLOW RATE MINIMUM 480 GPH"

I run a 3000 on my 75 gallon with 1" lines, and like the results. It seems to be just right. I'd probably go with at least the 4000 with your setup IMHO.

Okay 4000 Non High Head... 560 GPH without the chiller factored in. I'm not sure how much your chiller will effect that, but it will reduce it to a degree.

That is still in the ballpark with your 100g estimate of actual water volume but it is on the borderline of the upper level and coming close to the chiller minimum.

Perhaps the high head model would be better and offer more latitude for you.

If you are not married to the Quiet one, consider a pan-world, iwaki or little giants. I have a little giant 4MDQ that ran my old skimmer. It was VERY quiet, but did get hot to the touch.

I'd put a Union and Ball Valve before and after the pump for sure.. allowing you to isolate the pump and remove it completely for maintenance.

I'm thinking about using a Quiet One pump for my return on a 120g system. It has two returns. Would you all recommend the 3000 or the 4000 (not High Head)? Thanks for your suggestions. Oh said:
ron i have an iwaki i'll sell you cheap if you are interested, i have no need for it anymore and it used to be my return pump for my 200. works great

Unless your really money constrained I'd go with the 4000 high head or even the 5000. And, I'd add a couple valved connections (or at least one more) for future things like: Phosphate reactor, carbon reactor, Ca reactor, and a recirc return to control over all flow.

My main pump feeds, 2 returns, chiller, 2 phophate reactors, carbon reactor and my skimmer. With the skimmer taking the most flow. I also have a provision for a future Ca feed. The reactors don't take much but it does save me from adding pumps.

$$ isn't an issue I just don't want more than I need. With these suggestions and further research I think I'm going to go with the 4000 HH model. Thanks guys

The model on DFS above the 4000 HH is the 6000, and that would be my recommendation. The 4hh will give you about 800gph at 5 feet (disregarding all other things) and the 6k will give you about 1000gph. This will give you the room to do other things and make sure you get sufficient flow through your chiller. It only costs $10 more and uses only 20 watts more power. If the extra flow goes above your 4 to 5 times rate after all your fittings, chiller, and everything else, then you can simply T off the excess and run it back to the sump/fug. This way if you want to add something else later you can, like psteeleb has, and it will satisfy all your needs.
