Return pump question

I'm in the process of plumbing my 240g tank. Does anyone have any suggestions on a good quality return pump? I was using a QuietOne 4000 for my return pump on my 125g tank. Please let me know if anyone knows a good return pump for this size tank. Thanks in advance.

reeflo pumps are really good if you are doing external...quiet and very efficient. just to feed the tank a snapper would work, if you want to split it off and run other components like your skimmer off your return then a dart may be the best route. i have a snapper just for returns on my 210 now and will do a dart when i redo my plumbing so i can feed multiple reactors off a single pump

I just replied to your other thread...

I use Quiet One return pumps too. Never had problems with them, they are small and run quiet & cool. I'm sure there are better pumps, but I've always been happy with the price and production of the Quiet One.

you could go two mag pumps for return then if one fails you will always have one for flow.

i do not personally like quiet one pumps..i feel that they put more heat out than mag pumps..plus alot of hobbysts use them so you can salvage used ones for parts.

I use Panworld on my main system which is a 140, 65 prop, 40G sump and a 30G refuge. One pump feeds both tanks and the fuge.

I've switched from a Mag 7 to a QuietOne 4000 and my temps went down about 3 degrees. If you can, stay with a QuietOne - they're more energy efficient, and in my experience also quieter.

Peter...

my Quiet one 4000hh runs way warmer than my mag 12, i had to take it off and use it for a backup/saltwater mixing pump. My fans were constantly on by my ac3 controller with the quiet one connected to my tank.

my preference in submersibles are 1 oceanrunner 2 mag 3 sedra 4 eheim

I wonder if it's because it's the "high head". My 3 QO 3000's & my QO 4000 run considerably cooler and quieter than the equivelant mag drive pumps.

Don't mean to steal thread, but is it really necessary to have at least 5-10 times flow with return pump? It would be nice if you could get away with the smallest overflow box possible.

A 240 G tank should call for 1200GPH+ to 2400GPH return based on rule of thumb. THe OR Pumps tend to get around 14 to 17 GPH per watt. A Tunze 6101 gets about 70 GPH per watt. It would be nice if you could get away with the smallest overflow box possible, but you gotta wonder if skimmer is getting enough murky water to clean the tank effectively.

3-5 is sufficient, and in fact for your size tank i bet standard overflows would only do 1200 gph which would be just fine so base yours off what a manufacturer would do. making up the flow in the display with other pumps is exactly how to make up for it and a great route

I have a 135 Gal. and i use two quiet one 6000. Dont waist your time or money on the 9000, there is nothing quiet about it. Im happy with the two 6000. If one goes down i still have one in operation.

Sorry Pampee but I agree with everyone else. Quiet ones are better and produce less heat, atleast in the QO 4000 and 3000 vs mag 9.5 and 7 .

I would try a QO5000 or 6000 for a 240.

I use a Reeflo Baracuda for my 150, and I am very happy with it. I have it running in 3 different areas along the back. I have a Korela 4 and a 3 inside the tank for additional flow along the sides.

I have a Snapper on a 125 going through an Oceans Motions but it's a bit low on power for this application. If you used it for just returns it might be sufficient.
If you get a Dart you won't be disappointed because they are super quiet and don't add as much heat as a submersible.

I run a dart and love it.

To run an external pump, you'll have to drill your sump and add an additional bulkhead.

It's worth it though, that one pump runs just about everything on my system (reactors, return, etc).
