Return Pump Advice

I have had a MAG 7 in my 90g corner for 4 years now. The noise is getting unbearable.

I'm looking to upgrade to a quieter pump. If I get an external I don't want to drill into my sump, so i'll need to make sure I can plump it to go over the wall of the fuge to pull the water out. I don't have much room in the tank stand so I'm just looking for recommendations.

My friend has an internal Quiet One 4000 pump and I personally thought it was pretty quiet when I saw his tank.

I'll look into the eheim pump. I had a QO 3000 for circulation in my salt vats. I wasn't impressed with it and it eventually seized after 3 years of weekend use.

I don't have any experience with other pumps, personally, but I have a Mag 7 on my 90g, and I think it's fairly quiet. Is it possible you just need a new impeller or cleaning, perhaps?

Its 4 years old. Its been cleaned every 4-6 months since I've put it in. It may just be about time to get a new one.

Even though it's been cleaned on a routine basis the blades still wear down and the magnets swell, so I have to agree with the post above it would get louder over a period of time.

You might try a new impeller first. It would be the most inexpensive option.

I've replaced my impeller probably every 1.5 years in the 3.5 years I've had my Mag 7. Just last week, I had to replace the volute as the front slot that holds the impeller in place broke off. Now as good as new.

I have a spare Mag 7 impeller if you want to give that a try. Just let me know!

I would recommend the maxijet utility pumps. I've had great experience with them.

Look at tunze pumps also been running mine for over two years and they are super quiet. Plus if something does go wrong you ship it to Austin for warranty work. So you usually have you new pump within a week

Tunze makes return pumps?

Yeah prob for past couple years. They even have one that is electronic variable so if you want you can vary flow throughout the day

Kyle,
I have a Eheim 1262 for my 90gal, I bought it used from a member here and it has been running flawlessly, no problem restarting when I turned it off. The Elos also comes with Eheim pumps for both the return and skimmer.

I like what i'm reading on the Tunzes, but everything I read about Eheim I like as well too.

The wife is just getting annoyed with the sound and personally I can't blame her. lol

Both are great pumps I would go with either just go for what is on sale if you go new.

That is how I got my tunze pump there was a gb on them and I had great success using their streams.

I have a cheap RIO and I doesn't make and noise; I do however have it floating in the water so that maybe why.

If you do an external and pull it over the edge put a check valve above it. Why do you ask? Most water pumps don't create good suction with air so you have to prime it. It sucks the first time and water will most likely go everywhere, but if you can put a check on it should come back on in the case of a power outage.
