filter sock on your overflow line coming into your sump helps alot
 
Most any filter SOCK (not mesh bag) will do what you want, but you'll need to change it out often. Usually every three days. This is why people have several so they don't have to stop and clean it out immediately.

They gave you incorrect information, perhaps that applies to the bags they sell. The bags come in different micron ratings i.e 300 micron bags filter particles down to that size, 100 micron filters stuff down to that size. A human hair is roughly 80-100 microns for reference.

Yes, it has a drawstring on the end. It is very large.
