Refractometer

Do you think purchasing one is worth the money?
A LFS recommended a hydrometer, but they don't look like they would be very accurate.

Is there a brand and/or model of refractometer that any of you would recommend?
What would be the price range?

Thank you.

You might want to keep an eye on the Group Buys thread, they come up from time to time.

Yes, they are worth it. In fact it may very well be the most important piece of equipment you will ever buy in this hobby.

A well calibrated refractometer is one of the most important things I'd recommend a person have on hand. It's a fundamental parameter whose importance is critical. There's been some doubt about the long term accuracy of hydrometers, and they're really not worth messing with.

Sorry to jump in with a "Me Too!" but I wouldn't even consider having a saltwater system without owning a refractometer...

(And having it properly calibrated!)

hands down, its one of the most important things to have. I was shocked to see what mine was compared to my hydro after I got it...

Thanks for the direction on this guys.

Anyone know of a particularly reliable or exceptionally accurate brand/model?

Johnny - thanks for the link.
Does anyone have any opinions on this brand?

The one linked from Drs. Foster and Smith is the exact same make/model as the one I have, and have been using for many years now... I can recommend it... Do make sure you get it properly calibrated though... (Not just with RO/DI water, but calibrated with a calibration solution too... There are a few members that have bottles of the calibration solution.)
