Reef System Lighting Question

I have a 120 gallon reef system. I use the Marine Orbit LED system on my tank. Question - is this lighting sufficient? If not, please make some suggestions to some economical alternatives that would provide appropriate lighting levels. I'm keeping mostly LPS and some SPS in my tank.

Thanks,

Mars Aqua, you will find on ebay has been used by quite a few with success. Especially the unit with wifi support. Little expensive though but u can control the lights from you cell phone with day night variation.

I agree. I also had orbit in the past and its not sufficient.
I currently have marsaqua, really happy with it. Only is i miss is day and night variation that provides more natural environment for reef. At some point i may get a wifi unit or ledzeal.
I will post a marsaqua review from reef central. Hope you find it helpful.

Yup, this one is absolutely same as marsaqua. Just dont have the marsaqua sticker :D
You have to remember in order to get good coral growth you need 3-4 watts per gallons of light for sps. Other will do great even in lower. ( general rule).
So keeping that in mind you will need at least 3 fixtures for your 120 gallon. This light is 165 Watt each. So 3 fixtures will be 495 watts divided with 120 gallons= 4 watts per gal. WAALLAA!
You can also check yr current orbit led to see if it is providing you that much.
Be careful not to bleach yr corals under LEDs, its easy to do say.

That 3-4 watt per gallon does not apply to current lighting that is avail

What he said. Not a good rule to follow with modern lighting

Then what is a good rule of thumb? Would just 1 of those 165w plus my Marine Orbit be sufficient?

In my opinion if you are eventually going to get more sps I would look into ai, radions or add some t5's. Use the t5's as the main light and your LEDs as supplementation

As marine orbits led is not a high par led system

Per their description
The Current USA Orbit Marine LED is a great choice for aquarium applications where high PAR values aren’t needed—marine fish, soft corals and some LPS corals.

Use what you can now and save your money for something better in the future. Is your 120 a 4 foot?
If so I would go with 2 radions or 3 hydra or two kessil a360w(wide)

Might find three or four vega or hydra( not 52) in the used market for a great price right now. Seem like lots of people are upgrading to the newer hydra 52 hd

One thing I have learned overtime in this hobby is that, we tend to believe that only the most expensive brand names will work. Nothing else will.
I am a person who likes to challenge conventional and it works well for me. But thats just me.
