reef safe magnets

i was reading about an idea of using magnets in the tank to mount frags on the external walls i.e. zoas ... can we use any magnet?

You cannot use any magnet becasue of leaking material in your tank...i think its iron...not sure though.

Dane at Rift to Reef was telling me that he may get some in where you can mount frags on soon.

THere was another post on RC about this.

here is a site that makes them specifically for mounting frags

there is some discussion on them on DWMAS about a guys tank in Houston where Marc took a bunch of pictures recently

they have 3 sizes depending on glass thickness

anyone check with the guy for a group buy discount - I'm probably going to order a couple sets of the large ones

I wasn't in the mood to be patient. I got the kind for 5/8" as my tank is 1/2" thick.

i got my aquamags in last week. I got the medium size and 1/2 inch glass I think and they're more than powerful enough. I got the package of three and all said it was $18.00 including shipping.

Are they protected (coated) on both sides now, or is that a special request? I'd like to hang things from the overflow, but the outside portion would then be submerged as well.

Their site states both side can be safely submerged.

Thanks.. I didn't look at the faqs pages... i emailed them to get an estimate or spec on weight of attached pieces too so see what kind of limits there are on the magnets for larger corals or those already attached to a small piece of LR.

according to the packaging yes as far as being safe to put in the tank. I got the medium's in consideration of weight. The idea, I think is that the coral will eventually attach itself to the wall or overflow as well.

Their FAQ page answered that, btw. :) They suggested the regular size at first, and then you could upgrade to a stronger magnet as the frag got heavier.

Yep ;) But no specifics on weight. I suggested they put some numerical data for supported weight if they have it on the faqs or products page. The way it reads if you buy a medium you can upgrade to large, but no mention about larges upgrading or if thats available. Sounds like it is, but nothing definitive.

I see you are thinking like an engineer. I didn't pursue it to that degree.

Since I'd probably put a twig or an acan or a zoa on it, it won't matter what it weighs.
