Reducing nitrates help

Due to my ich battle I can't change my water to keep their stress as low as possible. Need suggestions on reducing my nitrates. They are up to 30-40 with my heavy feedings lately.

You should be able to water change.
Take you're time pouring water back in and not chasing fish around.
And make sure you're water is the same temp.

At this point I don't want any change at all for them. Anyone ever use that kent nitrate sponge?

Have you determined the cause of the ich? What was/is stressing the fish? That should be priority 1. Most fish can handle 30 ppm nitrates without harm for short periods. And how bad is the ich? A few spots? or fish covered?

Why are you feeding heavily? If you are trying to get medicine/garlic/ whatever into the fish with ich, try target feeding with a turkey baster. Fish are smart when it comes to food. Food comes out the baster? Then I want to be right there and eat from the baster. Fish are only going to eat x amount. If you feed heavily the drive to get their share actually decreases.

Doing 10 gal changes 2x week will help reduce the nitrates and will not effect the stress level. Make the changes from the sump. What are your current nutrient reducing practices? What filtering materials are you using? Polyfilter, carbon, purigen, skimming level? Dry skim small amount or wet skim large amount? How often are you changing the filter medium? Can you add macro algae to the sump to help remove the nitrates and provide food for tangs and other veggie lovers?

Sorry for all of the questions, but the sponge may reduce short term, but if you continue with large feedings and do not determine the cause of the stress you are just building an up side down pyramid - which will fall with a loud crash!

Feeding with garlic. They still eat like pigs. I feed small doses several times a day versus all at once. Dunn a poly filter and external octopus skimmer. Been battling it for 2 weeks now. Since I got a blond naso.

How many tangs do you have and what body type? How is their behavior now? Are they schooling together or is one staying apart from the others? The old rule of thumb was one tang per body type.

After 2 weeks you should be over the aggression if it's going to stop.

I have a naso and sailfin. They get along good. My powder brown was a jerk but he died from the ich. He causedost the stress and killed my regal.

How big is your tank 4 tangs can be a lot if you
don't have an oversized skimmer that is prob why your nitrates are so high

180 gallon. Have a reef octupus 2000. I think it is rated for 200. I wasn't running any type of cheato or algae in my tank but was able to get some from a nice member. Hopefully that will bring it down
