Red Turf Algae

I've also seen this called cotton candy algae on reefcleaners. Ive got it in my DT and fuge. It came in on some chaeto and spread over a few months. I can handle it in the main tank, but the fuge is gonna be harder. Is there a snail or crab that I can put in my fuge to eat it or should I just take all the chaeto out and replace it? Any other suggestions are welcome. Thanks

Normally red turf algae comes in on rock, frags or even snail shells, looks like velvet and pretty hard to get rid of. Mexican turbo's and tuxedo urchins eat red turf algae . http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1796580 http://www.reefkeeping.com/issues/2002-12/nftt/index.php

Cheers,

I watched the turbo eat a good amount last night off a powerhead. I'll probably add another snail this week, and then in a few more weeks.

The turbo's and urchin's work fast and will make a big difference in just a week or so...just don't add too many.

Cheers,

I had the same problem, had some of this stuff in my macro when I got it from a member. It started growing like crazy in the fuge only, and got pretty out of control. I've got a turbo snail that is larger than a golfball, so I moved him into the fuge. Within a week, there was only a little bit left that was buried deep inside the chaeto where he couldn't reach. Since then, I haven't seen any new stuff grow!

I've only got one turbo, I'll probably add another one or two today. I want them to eat it, but still be able to live and be sustained in the tank, so I dont plan on adding to many. I also have the urchin coming in tomorrow, can't wait to see how he does. I'll have a turbo in the fuge for this week, there is a ton growing in there. I tore out a huge mat of chaeto and kept a small bundle, which has no cotton candy growth in it. I seem to be gaining the upper hand.
