well having tested a red sea pro bucket at 360 CA at 1.0255 I had red sea send me another, same thing, 360 ALK good at 10.9 and MG also good 1480 . Using a brand new red sea test kit and a salifert test kit, the calcium is just way too low.

Time to switch brands.

I stopped using RS about two years ago primarily due to alk spikes, but also a perpetual red slime that never would quite go away for good. I'd suggest vitro... but it is a bit more expensive.

I've used Red Sea coral pro for the last 4 years. Zero issues. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk said:
I had been using it since it's debut so atleast that long, but something has gone wrong.

And to mix for 4 hours max ? No reason in the world the CA should precipitate out in 6 hours. Hell the water needs time to aerate.

Hmm, I let mine mix anywhere from an hour to overnight...just depends on how life works out. Very odd though.

I think the shorted mixing time was something to do with clarity , But I'm not putting water into my system that has a redox of near zero into my tank, As is I see the ORP drop doing water changes. So if their new and I mean in the last year , has done something to require instant mixing and using I'll go elsewhere.

Makes NO sense to me as to why the CA would drop from extra mixing ? I got 2 buckets ( both broken too as they have gotten cheaper) from 2 different sources, 1 from Dr Fosters the other from Red Sea direct and they both mix to 360 calcium ? Has anyone with no troubles actually checked their new batch for CA ? I was guilty of trusting red sea to deliver what they say, I know when I started using years ago I loved the 450-460 calcium I was getting getting.

But I was noticing my CA levels dropped after water changes so I checked a fresh batch and now I know why.

Never mind, I bought a new red sea refill kit and now my tank reads 550 calcium, the exp was 04/16 so not old , but new kit shows everything high. I know my salifert kit was a little old, guess time to re examine my test kit regimen.

You still bring up a valid point though. I think I'm too trusting of the salt mix as well. Time to start testing more frequently when I get a new batch in. Just to make sure.

I stopped using RC pro once they switched over to their new mix.

I had since been using Tropic Marin Pro forever. I've tried Salinity and didn't like the fact that I couldn't store it for periods at a time.

I have since switched from TMP to hw-Marinemix Reefer and I'll only go back to TMP if I can't find hw. I've been very pleased with my numbers and my polyp extension on my corals seem to have done better as well.

I know this is the age old debate. I have use RS Coral Pro and Aqua Vitro. Many buckets of each. I do experience the Red Sea red slime issue. I also find lots of inconsistent batches with the Aqua Vitro, especially with the 1st 2 water changes, and last 2 water changes in a bucket. I have just about thrown my back out trying to "stir up" the 200g bucket. So I am back to using reef crystals. At least with RC I know how much of BRS 2 part and MG to add to my 40 gal water changes to get parameters perfect each time since I know they mix low. But the price far offsets the premium for the other salts.

I have learned if you have a red sea test kit with NO exp date, it's OLD. I never worried too much about exp dates on test kits but I have seen twice now that red sea kits go bad, reading 25% or more off from actual.
