Red Sea Mag test kit

I did not want to side trackTjs thread so here's my ????????? My mag has been testing at 1400-1440ish for the past few weeks. Should i be concerned here? Anyone else using this test kit and finds it reliable? Should I raise it up to 1500s being that the test kit is off by 200ppm or so? I'll have to purchase another mag test kit. Is Elos the better one? Come to think of it, at this point I want accuracy in my test kits. What's the best one across the board? We spend so much on other things. We shouldn't skimp here.

My Red Sea Mg test kit was reading 350 higher than my ELOS kit so I would find a LFS or two and take them a sample and have them test it and see what they get. That is if they will test it for you for Mg. My Red Sea is the one where you turn the water Red then add the drops to the water to turn it blue and I found that it is not as good IMO as the ELOS where you test them then do a little math. Just seems like it works better.

I've been using the Red Sea Pro kit (where you have to shake each drop "A" for 15 seconds). I will compare it with an Elos test kit, however to me the important thing is the consistency. If my Red Sea Pro tests say 200 less than Elos at let's say 1150 opposed to 1350. And I compare them again and again the Red Sea is 200 less than Elos, can I not assume that for my water to be 1350 I need to have a reading of 1550 on the Red Sea? Of course I'd verify that the first time again against an Elos.......but if it consistently test 200 under what it should be I don't have to toss it (I have a pretty new kit) I can just make an adjustment

If it were off by a consistent amount, sure, that'd work. But what if it's two lines on a different slope? At 1350 the true reading might be 1150, but without knowing the slope of the difference, that really doesn't do you much good for other values. If you did a bunch of measurements at different levels, you could work up a correction factor.

these are the recommendations from Red Sea on RC to help the problem, they stand by the accuracy of the test

And their video if you have not seen it:

I'd like to hear more on this as it's obvious Red Sea is going to stand by their product. I've always followed directions on the test kit and have been getting consistent numbers (1400-1440), but if others have done the same and consistently get higher readings against other test kits, than there's a problem. Tj, I've had that happen [smilie=smile.gif] . Now I just write sticks on a piece of paper to keep count [smilie=lol.gif] .1,2,3,4, cross !! [smilie=rofl.gif]

Marc, you brought this up on your review. I'm pretty sure you followed instructions to the tee. What do you think?

I needed a new Ca and Alk test kit. I wanted a Hanna checker but they were out of the Alk ones. Went ahead and got the red sea three test kit (price for 3 was less than price for two separate kits). I look forward to testing and comparing with yall's numbers and experiences!

What needs to be done is to test a sample with Elos, sal, and RS then send that same sample to the professional testing company and see where each stands

I compared my red sea pro test to elos last night. They both read the exact same using the method in the video for the red sea.

I have used both Elos and Red Sea Mag tests and have to say I like the Red Sea best. I found it really easy to use, more so than the Elos. I don't think one is more accurate than the other, personally...however I haven't tested that either, lol! I do know that any of the kits are just as likely as the next to have a bad kit, so, comparing one to another based soley on brand is no more accurate than basing on a personal opinion. ;) (My Elos test kit turned out to be bad and gave excessively high readings.)

I noticed that with all the testing I've been doing to zero in the magnus doser I've "rubbed" off the numbers on my syringes. I just got a combo set of red sea pro tests, the ca, mg, and alk (from amazon for like $42). The first thing I did was use scotch tape around the "important" numbers on the syringes that I had rubbed off on the others ones, for instance the 10 ML on the big syringe and the 1 ml on the little ones. I don't know if anyone else has had similar problems

I tested repeatedly, both with tank water and newly mixed aged saltwater, as well as changing salt brands. I watched the video repeatedly, and did exactly as instructed. I always had a reading over 1600ppm, even with Instant Ocean. I never could understand why. I just use Salifert.
