Red Scooter Dragonet

Does anybody have experience with this? Fish store owner is telling me they will eat anything, internet says they are equivalent to a mandarin, not very accepting of prepared foods? Just curious because I had another fish store tell me they were easy to feed also?

NOTE: My tank has only been up for 2+ months. I would normally not even ask but some of the internet info is conflicting so I thought the best info is members who might actually have this fish.

Thanks for any info.

Just like a mandarin, don't get it with ur 2 month old tank. I want one for my year old 210 and won't do it yet.

I too would not add him after 2 months.

i have him in my 72 and he eats frozen food. I have to turn off the pumps in order for him to even catch the food. But with any those fish, they sometimes eat frozen and sometimes don't. You may have to train him to eat frozen food by putting him in a quarantine tank and making sure he eats it. I got lucky with him eating frozen immediately.

Okay, very much appreciate the responses. I kind of figured that would be the response, was hoping not...but will not be purchasing one of these. I will go with a goby of some sort.

Thanks

It is not recommended to have them I anything less than 75 unless you get them to eat frozen. I've heard of people keeping mandarins in 12 gallon tanks but only when they will eat plenty of frozen. I believe melevs reef has a good way to train you dragonet to eat frozen or pellets. It involves putting it into a container only they can get to, then submerging it in their favorite spot of the tank. Eventually they may go in and find a buffet.

you can always buy copepods and let them mutiply in your tank. if the dragonet does not eat the frozen food, you want to make sure he has a bunch of copepods he can eat.

I remember my first dragonet. I spent almost 100 bucks in different foods and tactics to feed him and he still would not eat. After all the fishes ate all the copepods, he starved to death.

My tank is only 40 gal so I would have to supplement the copepod supply and as you said, yours eventually starved to death. So I will stay away from any dragonets unless I get a larger established tank. Just not worth it.

Thanks
