Red bug treatment

[I finally took the plunge and did the Interceptor treatment today. I'll know tomorrow for sure as far as poylp extension, etc.

I followed the directions to the letter with a 30% water change and a lot of carbon after 6 hours.

Here were my observations.

First hour - Nothing really happened, bugs still chowing all crabs and shrimp OK.

Second hour - hermit crabs start walking funny and looking "different" Cleaner Shrimp not active but OK. Bugs seem not much changed but could tell some had died and were just hanging on because the were just swaying in the current.

Third hour - no real changes

Fourth hour - bugs start disappearing most look dead but still a few hanging tough. Hermits start to die but only abuot 10% (I only had about 25 - 30 in the tank)

Fifth hour - only a few bugs hangin on and they look dead. About half the hermits died. The shrimp while stunned looking appear to be OK.

6th hour - I can only see 1 bug and he is flapping in the breeze  Shrimp were fine. So far half hermits dead. I did a 30% (45 gallon) water change and ran carbon in a Phosban reactor.

Under actinics tonight (about 8-9 hours after treating) I see no bugs whatsoever!!!! Cleaner are active again so that is a pleasent suprise as I thought they would be goners.

I'm going to change 20G again Thurs and then on to treatment number 2 next week!]

[When you say red bugs, are you refering to the brown photosynthesising flatworms that commonly show up in reef tanks, or, is this a differant critter? I've seen reference to 'red bugs' a few times on these forums but was not sure if these are the same or not. ???]

[Keith,
Instead of losing your hermits, could you have removed the majority if them until the treatment was over? I know they aren't much, but losing 15-20 hermits could spike your nitrates a little, correct?

How's the CL running?

[There is not enough "meat" in those 15 or so little guys to do anything to ~150G of water! I did remove many but they are all in the rockwork so most were impossible. It is good practice to take as many as you can out. Number 1 o save them and number to in case of the die off issue you mention!

The CL is awesome!]
