Red Algae

Hi all

I am a new member for DFW Marine Aquarium Society.

I have a question: how do I get rid of the red algae that has started growing in my tank?

Thanks

Turk

Looks like cyano/red slime algae to me. Is your tank new? Might you need to increase water flow is those areas?

Welcome to the club!

That would be cyno bacteria..... its a sign of excess nutrients and/or lack of water flow.

Tell us a bit about your setup and livestock, your source water, your parameters and what you feed (and how often) etc.

We can throw out some suggestions (even some good ones) to help.

OK - I have tested it several times but dont have them handy. I will double check it and post the water quality.

I had to remove my fish due to ick. They are all in the hospital tank with sg at 1.009. So, it is all inverts at the moment (when I removed the fish is when the red algae showed up). The sg in the tank is about 1.028. Calcium is running close to 500. PH at 8.5.

I have a refuge operating, a skimmer and 5 powerheads in the tank. Oh, the tank is a 220 gallon. I am using t5 lights (8 thiry-six inch bulbs that come on and off in a staggered fashion). The inverts and corals are thriving but this red stuff just showed up.

I am concerned it is gonna cover the tank. AND, I cant add any fish for 5 more weeks. :(

Any ideas?

You can siphon it out into a filter sock in your sump. Since you removed the fish, are you still feeding the tank at all? If you're still feeding the corals, it could be too much, and if you stopped feeding the corals, the tank may be re-balancing due to decreased food.

Hi,

More flow but not necessarily more powerheads. You can try repositioning your current powerhead's to eliminate any dead spots and get good flow throughout your tank as well as across the sandbed.

Cheers,

**edit** Which PH's are you using(brand, max gph etc)

a koralia #3 and a week old vortech.

I had some recent problems with red cyano in my tank and used this product from my local fish store. Within three days it was all gone and aside from one hammer coral, nothing else in the tank was affected. Its about 20 bucks for a teeny tiny vial of it, but it definitely works. My cyano outbreak was far worse than yours.
