Recirc Skimmer Question

Am I missing something or am I just blind?

On a Recirc skimmer, is there an additional pump to recirc the water back into the reaction chamber?

That black blob thingy is the recirc pump and the input for the skimmer is above that correct?

David,

The skimmer needs to be fed by a separate pump/powerhead or can be gravity-fed (i.e. by overflow drain).

I T'd off one of my drains to directly feed the skimmer.

Hi Dave
I am afraid you are mistaken. The "black blob" is only the recirculating pump. If you look just above it you will see a small water input, that is where the water gets into the skimmer either from an additional pump or from tank return water.

No. You've removed the recirculating pump!

What he's saying is to add a Tee to your overflow drain, allowing surface water to directly feed your skimmer. That water would go in the "water in" location. The pump stays and you don't modify the standpipe.

Well, in your first picture, the Sedra recirc pump takes water from the body of the skimmer and the output goes directly back into it (hence the name, recirculation mod).

Right above the pump where you have labeled, "Water In", is where water needs to be fed to the skimmer. The other PVC parts on the left side of the skimmer is how the water exits the skimmer.

I'm not quite sure what the second picture is denoting but the first picture looks accurate.

You just need to find a way to feed the skimmer water from the tank/sump.

My question is, Is this mod worth doing? Do you see a dramatic improvement? Has anyone done any kind of testing to see if the skimming is any better?
