Raising SA.

Is it ok to add some salt to my Top off to slowly raise up my SA level? I am a little low at 1.02 and I am running LSP/SPS.

Thks

I will add a cup or so maybe once a month in my Kalc topoff to keep SG in check as I lose salt to the skimmer. You may want to just add a strong gallon 1.026 or so at a time while taking out a gallon so that you do not shock the fish. If you add a strong gallon you will want to do this very slowly over a couple of days until you establish your SG in the range of 1.024 for softies. HTH...

With the evaporation thats happened in my tank... I'lll add a cup of salt as part of my weekly check if the salinity level isnt at where I want it which in my case is a little bit higher then others have it.. 1.027

I would verify the reading prior to making adjustments, are you using a properly calibrated refractometer to measure this??

Cheers!

:?: I didn't think salt evaporated :?:

Ok, I have a 120. My SA is at about 30PPM right now. IE 1.022. I would like to get it bumped up to 1.026. What would be the best way to creep it up slowly?

Hawg,
salt doesn't technically evaporate, but as the water evaporates from things like water spray, etc, the saltwater evporates out the water, leaving salt and whetever other minerals are dissolved in it. As it builds up, it produces salt creep.
Dazed,
When I need to raise my SG I set up an ultra concentrated gallon of Salt water (about 1.100) and use a drip method where I drip for an hour, turn it off, leave it for an hour and retest. I'll bring the levels up by 2 pts (in your case 1.022-1.024) over 24 hours

why not just take out 1 less gallon than you replace with salt water

suck out 9 gallons and replace with 10 gals

do this for a few water changes and it will rise up slowly

FWIW,

Mine was at 1.020 and I just topped off my 90 with Saltwater for 3 -4 days at ~1G per day.

In a week it was up to 1.025 or so.

When the SG in my system falls a bit low from skimming, etc.. I just mix my water changes a couple of points higher and add about a gallon or so more than I took out. As the water evaporates back down to normal running level, the remaining salt helps to push the SG even higher.
