Questions.

So my tank is 2 years old 1 year fresh start. 55 gal display, 10gal sump working on Fuge
My basic levels are good, stability is everything.

I do a 10% water change every week and a half and a top off at least twice a week.

What I want to know is.

Alqalinity, Calcium and other items for corals. I know they are important but why, what do they do specificly. And secondy do I need them.

Hi Heather!
You are asking about what I have been primarily focused on learning about for the last couple of months. A gentleman by the name of Holmes-Farley (his last name) has written some fantastic articles that bring these things into focus. In fact, just this week, Ron C. here on this forum helped me with my questions about all of this. Ron refers to one of Holmes-Farley's articles in one of his posts, directing me to a lot of knowledge. Here's a link to one of his articles. He has articles on every subject in this hobby, I bet. Just do searches with his name and whatever you want to know.

David,

Thanks so much! I have scratching my head, asking myself over and over trying to figure out why its important. I'll read it right away then plan for tank adjustments, first thing is firt, water quality. Ive been looking for "mandrake" plants when I really needed Mangroove plants. Hand meet forehead, common sense thank you for finally kicking in before something stupid happened.

Thanks again for pointing me in the right direction.

Heather.

Have you been reading about Rachel and Leah in the book of Genesis, lately? That's the only place I have heard of those.
I have 4 mangrove "trees". I am not sure I am treating them in such a way as to benefit my system, though. They are growing very slowly.

Mangroves are ok for nutrient export but most people use cheato because it grows faster and the growth is what export the nutrients. When it starts to grow large you trim it and it's out if the system. When choosing a bulb for the fuge section the 6000k or higher spiral floresents have been what most people are using. Put it in a reverse cycle from the tank lights that way it can help reduce the pH swing. If you need help you don't seem to far from me I can help with whatever.

That's because I plan on using the plant XD... Not! lmao.

I got the names confused as I was looking for information on it.

And I love some help with the calc and alk and PH stuff. Its a new area of SW tanking for me. So from the source would be great. I mainly want the plants/trees to help maintain the PH balance. I have the hairy green monster in my tank and I go in and wipe/scoop it out on a weekly baises. The end result I want to achieve happier healthier corals and animals.

First off, what kind of coral do you plan on keeping. If your keeping just softies and zoas generally calcium and alk aren't as big a deal but you still want to keep them at acceptable levels. Generally frequent water changes will keep it in check. If you have more demanding corals like LPS or SPS you might want to look I to dosing a two-part(calcium and alkalinity). Let me know if you need me to swing by and check out your parameters. If you parameters are spot on, as long as you have good flow and turbulent surface on the water easier gases exchange your pH generally stays in normal levels.
