Questions about VHO ballasts

first, i was wonderring if you could run any length vho bulb between the caps? so i looked at my equipment to see how I could explain what I had. I saw that the ballast/black box said "risk of fire max 40w,type t-8." Is this the wrong ballast for VHOs? the setup I bought this from was running 2 36inch actinics from this ballast. is this wrong or dangerous? What do I nned to buy if anything or what would I need to buy to upgrade to the 60in that datmonkey is selling. thanks YUKI

I'm not sure what you have. What is the ballast you currently own? Name & model number hopefully. T-12 bulbs are what VHOs come in commonly. I think you have some normal output lighting, but that is just a guess.

Based on the ballast, it is possible to use longer bulbs. For example, the Icecap Ballast I use can run four 2' bulbs or three 4' bulbs or two 6' bulbs.

See i don't know because it is just a box with only that warning sticker. i do know that it was working and lighting up two 36" inch VHO actinics. i might cut open the box to see what is in side. thanks

I looked it up. marine depot says up to twelve feet and 325 watts. so I guess I am good to go on buying those lights. I don't know why the out side of the black box said what it said. thanks mark

Yes, with an IceCap 430, you can run as much as 12' feet of bulbs. I believe 4 2' bulbs would be as much as you can wire up though.

I used to have 3 4' bulbs over my 55g with the same ballast.
