Questions About Pico Contest?

What are the budget categories? I though it was $150 equipment, $150 livestock. However, in the rules i see 3 categories, equipment, livestock, and coral.

What is considered equipment? Are consumables like chemipure part of the budget? They are likely to be replaced within the contest timeframe so would both purchases count towards budget?

Is cleanup crew part of the livestock expense?

Just getting clarifications so i can plan my budget :)

Yes, coral is in another category, as we all know coral is one of the most expensive parts of the hobby, so I felt it deserved its own category. More for you to spend. :)

Consumables like Chemipure, Purigen, etc will be included as equipment and, to be fair, yes it will have to count again when you change it out.

Clean up crew is part of livestock expenses.

Ok, then i may be out. Originally we were talking $45 for tank, $100 for equipment, and $100 for livestock. The budget has doubled since then to $? for tank, another $450 for the rest. I can't get that deep into a pico tank :(

Well you don't necessarily HAVE to spend that much. I would hate to see you not do the contest because of that. You can spend however much you like.

X2, I don't plan on spending the limit.

I may not have to, but that may put most tanks at an advantage over me, so i am going to have to think about it for a while and plan my approach before ordering a tank

What type of heater do you think will work in these tanks? (something that isnt an eye sore)
what types of fish are allowed (ie clown, gobies, firefish, cardinals)
are we doing the dr. smith and foster tank wes suggested or the jbj?

It is the same tank. I believe we can use any pico under 4g

Yes. Any tank 4 gallons or under.

Any fish are allowed as long as it is a safe and acceptable environment for them. Gobies are most likely going to be the only fish that will be suitable for this small of a tank, but don't quote me on that.

I agree with CaravanShaka having chemipure, purigen, carbon etc count is insane. You figure a small bag of chemipure costs $10-15 and needs to be replaced AT LEAST monthly 6*10 is $60 on the low side, 90 on the high side. Thats the like 75% of the equipment budget alone. By the time you add a $25 heater and HOB filter at 30+ there is nothing left for rock/sand/lights etc. Carbon etc are things that are required to run the tank not modifications.

Yeah Logan I would make it be the intial cost of whatever you use like chemipure or purigen is deducted but anytime you replace it, it shouldn't be.

Would / should there be a difference or class between someone starting from scratch and managing a complete cycle Vs. components coming from an established tank and being ready to go on Day 1?
I know the rules state a deduction of $$$ for "used" but wouldn't there be a advantage in skipping the cycle phase?
This could present an unequal field right off the bat... Just a thought.

Maybe the start date should be a livestock date and be may 1st or something?

Another question. If i were to do an all in one tank, would the 4g max only count towards the display portion? It seems to me i could make the display 4g and have up to 2g to work with behind the false wall for filtration/equipment as that would be equivalent to a 4g tank with a hob filter or sump for usable space.

I see your point, but in the long run I think it will only make a difference of a few days. Since the tank is so small the cycle isn't going to be very long to begin with, so using established stuff will only shorten that by a few days, so I don't think it's going to make a HUGE deal.

I'm not really sure which tank you are talking about, but if it is marketed as a 4 gallon tank then I would imagine that it should be considered as a 4 gallon tank. Now if it is sold as a 6 gallon tank then no.
