question regarding transferring water from 90g to 12g

I have a medium sized algae problem in my main 90g tank that I am currently working to resolve.

I am picking up a 12g nano cube to use as a reef only tank - if I use water from my 90g tank, will that affect any algae outbreaks in the new 12g? or is the algae a direct result of the amount of time I had the light running in the beginning (I didn't know any better - I had the lights running almost 18 hours a day)

my 90g tank water is currently at 1.027 salinity - so my plan was to take 9 or 10g out of it, and mix it with rodi water to get it down to 1.023 - 1.025 and then replacing the 10g from the 90g with rodi water, thus also bringing that salinity back down to acceptable levels.

Algae outbreak is usually directly related to nitrate, phosphate, or nutrient levels in the water. If you have all those under control you shouldn't have an algae problem even running your lights 18hrs each day. I would go with new water for the nano if it were me.

it's strange - my phosphates have always tested 0, and my nitrates are around 5. But I've got some hair algae that I can't shake...it's strange. I started a refugium in my sump to try and eliminate it...but I don't know what else to really do.

Thanks for the advice on fresh water (I'm assuming you mean new saltwater, lol)

If phosphate and nitrate are good it must be nutrient levels. So water changes more often, feed less, maybe try biopellets, maybe try vodka dosing. I would start with the first 2.

Your tests are low because hair algae is consuming it you are seeing a false negative test results
