Question regarding Flow and SPS

My tank has been set up for about two years now and has it highs and lows but I have never been able to keep SPS for a lengthy period of time.

I recieved some SPS frags at the frag swap before the most recent one and from Servo. These frags did well for about three months and were encrusting and growing but over time just RTN'ed.

I really want to start keeping SPS again but I don't want to kill them. Now in my 75 gallon tank I have a pair of maxi jet 1200s and a Korila #3 and a return pump that shoots about 400gph. Is this enough flow? I have been considering taking the maxijets out and replacing them with a pair of Korila#4s... would this be ok?

Thanks in advance !

In my 75 I have 2 Tunze 6000's and 1 6055 with a combined flow of just over 5000gal/h at top speeds. I use a multicontroller on them so they pulse which the sps seem to really like. SPS like indirect flow . I would go with 2 korlia 4's and maybe even add a #2 or 3 for even more flow. Something that is controllable is really the best option but it cost a lot more.

Also make sure your water parameters are in check. Of course even the best sps people out there lose some to RTN for no apparent reason.

The current thinking on sps is 20-50 times the tank volume in flow. That give a flow rate of 1500 to 4500 gph of flow. Hold on to your shorts!!! If you have a sand botton go for the lower end of the scale:lol:

How's your cheaper end SPS doing (Digitadas, Slimers, Caps)? Are you able to keep those? I don't think then would RTN even if your flow isn't sufficient. Start out with those and then learn where to place the powerheads to make them happier. If you can't keep those, then i would suggest looking for a different problem, like traces of nitrates and phosphates.

Hi,
If your sps rtn over time it most likely is a water chemistry, water temp issue. Do you keep your Ca/Alk/Mg within NSW levels and how do you maintain these levels(i.e dosing??). What is your daily PH level/swing and temp/temp swing. How about salinity value and do you top off daily...weekly?? Are you using ro/di water? A major issue with sps is stability, you can have some nitrates and phosphates but that usually result's in corals losing color and not necessarily rtn.

Cheers,
