Question for the guru's - Refugium....

[I have a kinda funny question....

In my refugium...Josh gave me some grape algae...I put it in my refugium..and I guess I have too much water currant...it just turns round and round like a tumble weed....do I need to weight it down with something? will it hurt it to tumble?

also have a question for josh...if he reads this...the feather dusters in the algae....what kind are they? they look like baby Hawiian feathers....is that possible? :bomb:]
 
[If yall have that kind of flow in your fuge you should try gracillaria. No one that I know has been able to sustainably grow it. It needs a tumbling kind of high flow.

It is very valuable because tangs will flourish on it and is, in my limited experience, hard to grow. Partly because it takes more flow than most of our fuge's produce. Also because everything loves to eat it.

I put some in my fuge and my display when my tank was new. In the fuge it was overtaken by cheato, and in the display the Mexican Turbos gravitated to it and it was gone in days.]
 
[I have a slow flow in mine but that cheto is just so light . Its a huge ball and when it geot going it would just roll about. made my pods dizzy im sure!]
 
[Evidentually..I have plenty of circulation....My tank is a 30g and my pump ...pumps @ 166gph recycleing my tank 6 1/4 times per hour....maybe I can post some pix of my refugium...let me try...

[You need to anchor your grape caulerpa, or it will die. That stuff grows roots for a reason, and will spread nicely. Also, like most caulerpas, you need to keep the light on over it 24 hours a day, or it will suddenly 'go sexual'.

When that occurs, your water turns green because the fluid is leaked out of the plant, and the branches and stems will turn clear. Within 48 to 72 hours, it will dissolve and you'll be shopping for more.

Once I left my light on 24/7, it never did it again.

The micro featherdusters are hitchhikers, but will never grow to the size of Hawaiian featherdusters. Not even close to that size.]

Like Marc said. Anchor the algae down. Using a piece of live rock is easiest. The feather dusters will stay about the size they are now but will multiply. They are benificial and shouldn't become a problem.
