Question for Longnose Hawkfish keepers

Anyone keeping these in the same tank with cleaner and peppermint shrimp? I would like to add one to my tank, but not if my shrimp are at risk.

Each fish has their own personality. Some might eat shrimp and some might not. I have one and it hasn't eaten my peppermints, cleaner or fire shrimp.

Don't ask me why, but it seems if you add the Hawkfish after you've added the invertabres, they're fine. If it's visa-versa, then you might not be so lucky. Just speaking from personal experience, though.

Has anybody added the shrimp after already having the Hawkfish in there?

Its my favorite fish in the tank, and I have never seen him become even interested in my shrimps, this fish is great.

I have one that I won in the raffle. He is too cool. He hangs out and watches over the tank. I have never seen him eat but he does look good! As far as inverts go I have never seen him do anything bad.
Best of luck

Always wanted one. Cool looking fish, like a tiny little Sword Fish. I don't think my Falco Hawk would ever let it have a moment's peace.

I have also been interested in that fish to add a little variety....but have been wary....some of you have mentioned that you are keeping one....how large is your longnose ? I have been under the impression that as they get larger they would be more lilkely to go for the shrimp....

How big do they get, anyway? I thought about 3" tops. I know their mouth is bigger than it looks. I saw one swimming around in a tank at an LFS, had a Pep Shrimp in his jaws.

Well I bought one yesterday at DNA. He instantly found a perch and started checking everything out, including me. Got up at 3:30 this morning and was in the kitchen making coffee, looked over at the tank and he up on a rock at that end checking me out. This hobby just keeps getting cooler with time. Thanks guys for all your advise.

The Longnose Hawkfish is reef-safe. It will eat almost anything you drop in the tank, food-wise. It will also eat visible bristleworms, and I've had one for years. It grew to be about 4.5" long before it died a year ago. It was housed with cleaner shrimp, a Coral Banded Shrimp, Peppermint Shrimp, Porcelain Crabs, etc... never even looked at them.

I got a new one in January of this year, and it was with a Blood Shrimp, Cleaner Shrimp, Peppermint Shrimp, and Harlequin Shrimp. Again, no issues at all.

I've read that some jump out of the tank, but I've never seen that type of behavior in my tanks. They lack a swim bladder, which is why the jet about the tank and perch on anything. Pumps, cleaning magnet, even parked against the glass, they are very cute. They can stand on a mushroom, but also seem to enjoy standing up against the side of stalk-like corals (Toadstool, Colt, Kenya Trees). Mine sleeps in an Acropora colony at night.

It?s cool how hawks can just ?park? against the glass like that with no swim bladder and all. Even with a lot of currant in the tank, my Falco sleeps like that sometimes. Handsome fish, especially when they display.
