Question for Amanda......

Amanda,

One of my Black Percs had a clear stringer hanging out of the back of her today in the anal region. It was not opaque white, but translucent. I know clowns are prone to internal parasites so I wanted to post here and get an idea of the treatments available.

The perc is an ORA raised black perc and not wild caught.

I read that Metronidizole might be effective but can't track down if it is reefsafe or not. Are there any reefsafe treatments available for this and if not, what are the the non-reef safe ones. I do have a QT available if needed but fishing her out of the display could be a chore.

Doing some research, these seemed to be effective.... question is are they reef safe.

Gel-Tek

Fish Food

Both of those foods contain the correct medicine to treat internal parasites. I have no experience with the gel-tek food, and can't imagine my fish going crazy for it, but who knows. The meds are not reef-safe though. You can try it while running aggressive carbon. However if the fish do not eat the food, then it will just pollute your tank water.
For awhile I was dosing my fish food with metronidazole and had a rough algae outbreak afterwards. I didnt lose anything, but it was a mess to get it looking good again. Feather worms, bristleworms, etc. would probably be harmed by these meds.

Thanks,

Good to know its the right direction.... I'll pull her out of the display and into a the hospital tank and feed her the meds.

How long of treatment would you expect?

Well my handy assistant was able to get her out of the display and into the hospital tank today. The foods will arrive tomorrow so we can start treatments. I'll post back with progress.....

Well.... sad to report that she didn't make it overnight. Time to look for a new girlfriend for the other one now.

Sorry to hear that! It is frustrating when there isn't much that could be done to fix these critters sometimes. said:
Yep... or even more frustrating when they go so quickly you don't get a chance to help.
