Question about temperature

[You know, for the longest time, I had to battle with hair algae like you would not believe. I thought at first maybe it was because I dont have enough flow, but I have over 400gph flow on my tank to the sump and back with an iwaki pump.

then i thought maybe it was because I'm feeding too much, so I cut back to once every other day.

and a bunch of other things. I do bi-weekley water changes of a little over 10%. I changed my salt out because I found ammonia spikes in the the salt. I've even checked the R/O water for ammonia and so forth.

It all started though when I got MH for my tank, so I was wondering if temperature has an effect on the growth of algae in the tank?

The temperature in the tank is now 77 degrees. But before I got the fan, it got as high as 84 degrees. I'm just curious because I still have hair algae, but its not ouot of control like it was before.]

[How old is your RO membrane? I had the same problems with hair algae until I replaced my RO membrane. My tank temperature range from 81 - 84.]

[Ive had Green hair algae outbreaks but as soon as they pop up my Turbos usually mow them down fast. ATM I have brown strings of algae in the tank, its getting stuck on my corals and overflow, dunno where it came from or how to cure it other than plucking it out when I can.Looks like single strands of long hair...GRRRR :cussing:

[Now Andy, you haven't been trying to snorkle in your tank again, have you? ....long strands of hair....probably is your hair...you really shouldn't snorkle in your tank... :laugh long:

You can go snorkle in Scott's 700 gallon tank though(well, when he gets it fixed).]

Ahh close, you answered it but missed it :D If you have an access of nutrients in your tank, mainly nitrates and phosphates, and you add light like an HID, algae will explode, as you saw.

I'd test the nitrates and phosphates of your tank to start, then your RO water straight from your RO unit.

If that water is good, mix some salt water and test it too. Maybe its your container you mix water in?

It could be coming from so many places its not even possible to list them all]
