question about a problem with my overflow

Lately my overflow inside my tank has been filling up to the level of the water in the tank. Before it used to stay below the water level in the tank and pour into the inside overflow box. For some reason it seems like the overflow is not keeping up with the flow of the pump. Its been running now for 6 months and i didnt start having this problem until last sunday after i did a water change.

Does anyone have any suggestions or answers? I would like to try and solve this problem, its driving me crazy. Any help will be appreciated.

thanks,

Kenyon

just a thought, but sometimes i did that with my 29g and its because when i did the water change i took out less water than i put back in so it made the level higher.

Thanks for responding,

I thought about that too, and I added more water but the level in the sump would go back to the same level while the level in the tank would keep rising.

What type of overflow are you using, syphon overflow box or reef ready overflow type? Did you check to see if there is an obstruction in the overflow drain piping? If more water was added than was taken out during a water change, the additional water would rise in the sump.

An additional thought. Did you clean your return pump during the water change? It is possible your return pump could be producing almost more return water than the overflow can handle.

That would be my guess also.
Even a small buildup or piece of debris that gets caught on or in the pipes exiting the overflow, can cause what you describe.

Thanks guys for your help. I cleaned out inside and outside boxes on the overflow. Cleaned the tube also. It seems like that solved my problem. So far the water in the tank is draining into the inside overflow box properly. I havent cleaned the overflow box and tube since I moved 3 months ago. Now I know that I need to clean it out from time to time when I do a water and filter change.

Once again thanks Tremelle and Tom.
