QT Tank

What's a good size QT tank?

I have a 100 gallon tank and so far my plan is to have either 2 perculas or 3 Anthias...

But what's a good size for corals and those fish mentioned above?

And how do you obtain a stable QT tank? Would a 30 gallon tank with a hang on back skimmer be enough?

A 20G is suitable for most fish but a 30G will also work. Having the tank set up ahead of time will help ensure stable water parameters. Are you planning on using LR in the QT? I recommend establishing your bacteria colony with a sponge from your display. You can place this in your HOT filter.

I wrote an article for the newsletter a while back, but the long and short is to get as large a tank as you can manage, use a filter sponge in the main tank to kick start the biological cycle, and keep an eye on parameters.

I set up a 30g... but then I wanted to QT larger fish or have the option to QT more fish at once so I set up a 55g also

and I thought i'd never have more than 1-2 tanks in the home... now i look like a fish addict!

I know exactly what you mean.
I started out with just 1, but now since I use a fish and coral QT, I have 3…
not to mention the random containers of live rock curing.
I was considering a fresh water planted, but that will have to wait...

Great advice!"]

Thanks, I'm learning from one of the best!

I setup a 29... and its been just fine for everything I have put it in.

No skimmer needed, keep it up using water changes.

To fill up the QT, can I just use 30 gallons from my display and just make it a water change for my 100?

How much LR is needed?

I swap water from the main tanks into the QT during water changes.

Not much at all.. your parms are being handled by water changes. LR is only there to provide cover. If you dose with any meds, the LR will be killed anyway.

Seems pretty easy said:
Yup... with it running empty, that is easy. Just keep an eye on salinity and the general condition of the tank. I would put in a few larger snails for algae control. You can easily remove them if you need to medicate.

Before you buy, check out the parms etc. You don't even need to run lights unless its occupied by coral or fish.
