QT questions?

so I'm going to have to set up a QT tank ASAP!
The 5 gallon Home Depot bucket is cutting it for my little blue regal tang.
Sooooo.
Is it as simple as filling the aquarium up with salted and primed water and running filtration and aeration and heat....but then what about the cycle..
or use something from my main tank???
sooo confused :/

Yes on all your question, and yes you are going to have to deal with a cycle. The way I avoid this is I use a hob filter like a biowheel for my QT, so while I don't have the QT set up I put new unused filter pads for the hob in my sump so that they stay fully seeded. Then when I need them I just pull them out and use them and then there is no cycle. The when I take the QT down I throw those away because of copper I used and then take a new set and throw those in the sump to seed. You might have to pull the carbon out though depending on what you plan on dosing. Maybe you can find someone who already has a seeded sponge filter that they will let you use. The last thing a sick fish needs is to have to experience a cycle on top of everything else. Hope this helps

what i did last time was similar to bbprinting, but just with a sponge that stays in sump. its really the best way.

here is what i did...took 20 gallon long tank, did a water change on my display and put the excess in the qt. placed a small heater with a hob filter that could hold the sponge and fortunately for me i had a ac jr laying around to control it all. then i put a small 2 inch peice of pvc in for hiding and let it run. if you medicate dont use carbon but if you are just hypo you can but do not reuse it afterwards. i just had a small SO bulb on the tank and only ran it a couple hours a day.

okay well I have 2 sponge filter things, the rectangular ones that go in front of the replaceable filters..the ones on my HOB filter in my DT , and I don't think I need them ,consisdering my tank is 6months old and and I didn't need them anyway, in consideration of the live rock and live sand...
Will these work, considering they are intertwined with all kinds of good stuff!
The've never been changed-6 months of good bacteria!

Yes those will work fine, can you buy a small hob filter that will hold those pads? You really need water to pass through them instead of just letting them set in the tank.

Yeah Im thinking that I can somehow make it fit :)
so will that just skip the cycle and be suitable for fish to live in it....Or is it just a jump start!???!

'just be sure and check the ammonia daily to make sure it is not cycling. Are you going to lower salinity to try to rid him of ich?

well im not saying he's completely cured, because he's not , but there is no more white spots visible so .. I think I'll just continue dosing with the malachite green!

Make sure you put in some big pieces of PVC that gives him somewhere to hide out, like a T or Elbow the he has plenty of room to swim in and out of.

Part of the lifecycle of ich is free floating in the water and not a fully on the fish

okay, well Im getting the 10g tank and HOB filter tomorrow and going to try and get it all set-up before I go to work!
I'm thinking no substrate??? I'll eventually add LS, but not till he is cured?? Wise decision???

okay, the 10 gallon QT tank is set up
and he's in it
I have noticed that his eyes are hazy and swollen, he WONT eat!
he looks very thin, How do I get this guy to eat!
I got a huge sponge filter that has been in my DT for about 6 months and shoved it in my new HOB filter .....
I hope he makes it

You need to get some Garlic extreme to soak his food in, it provides the best chance of being eaten but still no guarantees.
