Q on top-off water? - Read another book...

[So maybe I shouldn't read books, but hey, I like pictures and it's something to do. Anyhow, read something interesting and was wondering what the group's take on this is:

"Purified water (R/O, DI) must be vigorously aerated for hours before being used for evaporation make up"

I sure haven't been doing this. I fill up my 5g jug from the RODI tap, then use it for top off as needed. No vigorous anything...

Thanks for reading - you may now argue amonst yourselves concerning whether this is right or wrong.

:D]

[The biggest reason is to get the water well oxygenated, and drive off CO2, so yes, pH reasons.

I believe theres some other reasons, I can't remember what though.]

[Not if you are using kalkwasser.

And since you are only adding a fraction of water at a time anyway, it is unnecessary. My 300g system has 3g of water added over a 24 hour period. If anything, pH rises as the freshwater mixes with the saltwater as it passed the pH probe.]

[The other thing is if you have pure RO water the pH will not matter. It quickly takes on the pH of it's surrondings.

Look in the RC reef chemistry forum as there are many many threads about this issue. RHF says it is a non issue.]

[So it's really only needed for water changes more s than topping off? I do run the water change water with a powerhead for 24hrs (well, I've only done one water change so far, but that's how I did it).

No need to take this to heart with daily 1-2 gallon topoffs?]

[Salt water for changes no doubt air it out and mix for a minimum of several hours and preferably more like a coulpe days.]
