Pygmy Angelfish question!

My tank is a 45g with a pair of false percs, a scooter blenny, a brown clown goby, 3 bumblebee gobies (who seriously, and honestly, eat 3x their weight in food), a canary wrasse, and a Green Spotted Puffer. I think his growth is stunted, he's a little bigger than the female clown, and was in a 10g tank before and hasn't grown at all since being moved. Poor guy. AAAnyways. Theres less than 10lbs of baserock (I can't find anyone nearby with liverock for sale, or any stores with decently priced lr) and lots of fake coral rocks and stuff.

I've been stricken with "I want them all NOW" fever and really wanted to get a Pygmy Angelfish but I've been told they need tons of live rock to feed on, and have also been told they do just fine without. I need opinions from some people who know first hand... I mean, he's going to be small, and I clip some algae strips in the tank once a week right now. Any thoughts? They're just so cute and I want one! I want to huggle him and hold him and call him mine. 8)

Hi,

You are actually overstocked already in your 45G tank IMO. I thought that the figure 8 puffer's only grow to around 2.5" when full grown and may become problematic as it gets older in such close quarters with that many fish. I would not add more fish, if they are eating x3 their weight then I would also be concerned with your water quality... since your biological filter is limited. I hope you currently run a sump/fuge setup, if not you shoud consider adding one to your system. The scooter blenny needs an established tank with an established fuge as well as adequate LR, even if eating frozen these fish are constantly looking for pods to eat(along with the wrasse). I suggest adding LR from an established system asap and then be sure to monitor your water parameters to ensure a mini cycle doesn't happen. Good luck

Cheers!

kaledrina: Not to give you a hard time or anything, but ten fish in a 45 gal is pretty well stocked, over stocked, actually. Are you sure you have room for another fish? I know the gobies are small, but the percs and blenny will get bigger, and from what I understand the GSP can be pretty aggressive in a crowded tank. If you?re talking about the Tetraodon nigroviridis, they require a very low SG as juveniles, almost brackish if I remember correctly, like around 1.005. Did you start the puffer out with fresh water in the 10 gal tank? Maybe this is what has stunted his growth.

Even though the Pygmy angels are small, they are pretty swimmy fish, and they really need to peck at live rocks or to be allowed to graze. You could supplement their diet with seaweed and veggies, but quite honestly, I think you are setting your self up for a loss.

Just my 2 cents.

I guess Ron and I were writing at the same time, I didn't see his post until I posted. Just didn't want you to think we were ganging up on you, but Ron makes a good point about the SB also, needing an established tank with lots of pods. You seem to have a sincere love for your fish, I just hate to see you setting yourself up for heartbreak.

Good Luck

Its a green spotted puffer, which started off in freshwater. It was actually my boyfriends fish but I took him when he mentioned selling him... He's really sweet, doesn't even bother the other crabs or snails. Keeps to himself and did so even in his previous home. He's about... hmm... a year old now I'd say.

Theres a 10sec video of him from when I first set up the tank (Noob fake corals!). We did a lot of research and found while they are brackish, they can be kept as either fresh, brackish, or saltwater and live longer/healthier in saltwater tanks. I know you're trying to keep me from killing the angel without needing to, and wasting my money. It took a lot of debate to get the clown goby, he was the last addition. I just need about 30 aquariums and I'll be satisfied :D

I originally started out with a 10g aquarium with the female perc, 3 clown gobies, crab, and the puffer. I pretty much had to upgrade as I got sick of watching the puffer pace the front of the tank 24/7. Still wondering if he's going to get much larger... I haven't noticed any change in his size whatsoever, in fact he looks really small now in the bigger tank. If I remember my boyfriend first had it semi-brackish and added the puffer and about halfway through the full-saltwater experience the gobies were added too. Then once it was fully SW he got the clownfish.

Puffpuff is so cute... I just want to pat him on the head and give him a cookie. I think thats what he wanted too. :p

Trust me. You get 30 tanks, you'll just want 31. I know that one day I'll be posting a thread about getting evicted because the floor to my apartment gave way and flooded the downstairs neighbors.

We had a pair of GS Puffers. They were Layla's first fish, in a 10 gallon. Izzy was stunted, never got bigger than my thumb, actually quite smaller, and unfortunately he eventually passed away. Miyake, the other one, is about 5 inches now.

Wierd how that happens.

Yeah, Puffpuff is cute (Well, his name is Picard but puffpuff is cuter)... I kind of want to start training him to jump for his food but I'm scared of him injesting air. I'd guess if other fish do it its fine, however since he's a puffer it scares me. Oh well its still cute to make him chase his dinner by holding the food in my hands and moving it around in the water. It keeps him happy too.
