Purple/Maroon Stringy Algae on SPS

I have a SPS colony that has a couple limbs with a dark purple / maroon stringy algae on it. About the color of Coraline, just stringy.

Any ideas?

yep, started out with bubbles only, then the purple started.

is that good or bad? and how do I get rid of it if the later?

Cyano can be bad- it can smother corals.. most of us have some of it from time to time- it's one of those dirty little secrets that we don't take pictures of or discuss until we get frustrated with it. :)

Cyano popping up is often part of the natural maturation of a tank, in combination with diatoms and GHA. In a mature tank, it can indicate problems with nutrition, flow, or lighting.

So - I've been through a bit of this over the past year myself. Chem Clean worked on the cyano. It did NOTHING to the dino.

When you turn off your powerheads/wavemaker/whatever you've got for movement, does the "stringy red stuff with bubbles" actually look like thousands of tiny tiny reddish dots held together by something clear? And, if you put some of it on something, does it feel like and look a bit like snot (lovely stuff, eh)? If that is the case, then it may be what my tank had...I got rid of it by hooking up the Phosban reactor and dosing a teaspoon of kalk in a pint of water every morning.

Mine was REALLY bad, so I also removed all of the rock in my tank without any coral on it and cooked it. Yours doesn't look that bad yet!

If this sounds like what you've got - I can forward the instruction I got from Brad Ward.
