Protein Skimmers.... Which is your favorite?

Ok, here's the deal.
I have a crappy Sea systems PS sump model and I have a very nice PM CV-626. The problem I'm faced with is " SPACE " or the lack of!
In the sump, I have only 6" to work with so the skimmer can not be too big around. Height, I can go about 25" which will leave me space to clean.
Basiclly the sump is a mod'd design from on of Marc's. It's a 20T tank with the return side being 6 x 11.5 inches and the refug being 15 x 11.5 inches. I do not want a HOT or HOB design since space in the cabinet is at a premium.

Thanks for the suggestions, comments and general observations.

BTW, the PM -626 is a 6 inch tube with a 8 inch base.
( I'll be using it on a future tank.)

Wht not take a flush trim router bit and trim of the excess acrylic around the base of your PM CV-626? Then you can just slide it into the 6" space you have available.

ive heard great things about the tunze 9010's

i heard their only 5'' by 5'' and you need about a 9'' or soo steady water level.

there suppose to be reliable and very quiet and long lasting i still yet have seen one skimmin

im stilll debating between euro reef

I'm loving my Lifereef, but as it was an upgrade from a Jebo P.O.S. years ago..who wouldn't love it?

Seriously though, it pulls a great amount of crud from my tank..no complaints here.

Thanks everyone. Keep the info coming.

I agree on the euro-reef but too large for the area in the sump. The smallist is the RC80 and it is 6"L x 16"W x 22"H. at ~ $498.00

I see the Tunze DOC Protein Skimmer 9005 will fit the area with measurements of 4.9"L x 4.4"W x 14.8"H at ~ $255.00 plus a 46.00 extension kit.

I see the AquaC EV120 Protein Skimmer w/ JG Fitting + Mag-Drive 5 Pump will fit the area with measurements of 4.75"W x 8.5"L x 18"H
and then the pump will be 5.0"W x 3.8"L x 4.2"H which I'd also have to find a place for. all for a mear ~ $344.95

I see the LifeReef SVS2-24 + Mag-Drive 9 Pump will fit the area with measurements of 8"W x 12"L x 22.5"H with pump. A steal at $403.00.

I'm starting to re-think where I should put this stuff in the sump.......

Here's the layout looking down on it: The overall inside size is 23"L x 11.5"W x 16"H
On the left lower area is the 4" x 5" area for the incoming tank water.
It will be filled with LR rubble.
The measurements from the left side to the first bubble baffle is 14.75".
There is ~1" space between each baffle.
The return area is 6"

I was planning on installing the PS in the return area. Maybe it would be better to install the PS pump in the return area and have the skimmer in the main refugium area.

Again, all thoughts welcomed!

Mike

Your PS should be in an area with constant water level. The return area won't be constant. It could be close with a top off, but the water level in the skimmer will most likely fluxuate with the water level.

The biggest problem with your plan is that in either location, the skimmer will remove the good critters that breed like mad in the refugium area. My sump layout is inlet/skimmer -> return <- fuge (if that makes any sense). This way, any copepods, mysis shrimp or other pods that make it out of the fuge get sucked into the tank and not the skimmer.

Like so...

hey that is the exact sump i would like to try and make..

who made it?

I have only one drain from my 90g RR soo how would i get the drain to go to both the drain with skimmer and the refuge area

would u just use a tee? would that send equal amounts in both direections..

where the water fallls from the refug does it make any noise that is loud (like at the LFS sumps) or just a litttle trickle?

any other comments?
