Protein skimmer

My wet dry filter has a built in skimmer, I know these aren't very efficient but I'd like to set it up until I buy a good one. The thing is that I'm not familiar with skimmers so I don't know if it's complete and what I need to get it start it and how to set it up! Heres a couple of pictures of what it looks like. I'll appreciate anyone's help!!

it could likely be just a simple foam skimmer that needs an air pump and a wood air stone. the water hose is a drain for skimmate and overflow. it might also run off a maxi jet as that grey intake looks similar to one, then an air hose would attach to what appears to be an air feed nipple facing downward. those normally have air adjustments to control it.

Thanks for the quick response! You're the second person who thinks this may run with a MJ1200 so I think that's what I'm going with! I drew a sketch with what I understood is how the skimmer should be set up. Correct me if I'm wrong :).

Yes, I forgot the valve. Will the air flow be the one that determines wether it will be wet skimming or dry skimming? What exactly is it for?

more or less, but with this you will just be happy to find a spot where it skims anything. you may also need a valve on the maxi jet as it may be meant to use an mj400 or something smaller. controlling water flow and air flow will give you the best chances of dialing it in right. it would be hard to tell you exactly as i have only used one of these for a short period a long time ago on my 55. it was difficult to get anything, so i would imagine the more control the better the chances.

I am going to try and get a hold of the previous owner maybe he can tell me what works best from experience. I also want to run it on a 55g that's the set up I have now.
